Efterklang – Magic Chairs

Efterklang is the name of a Danish rock group formed in December 2000.

The name ‘Efterklang’ comes from the Danish word for remembrance or reverberation. Though it consists of four core members, the group regularly includes three or more members for live gigs and plays orchestral and experimental rock music. Formed in Copenhagen, its four core members are: Mads Brauer, Casper Clausen, Thomas Husmer and Rasmus Stolberg. The original lineup also included Rune Mølgaard, but he has taken a more secluded role since 2007. When performing live, the core four-piece band is complemented with the addition of three to four closely-related live band members.

They have released albums on the British/American record label The Leaf Label, but also have their own record label called Rumraket (the Danish word for space rocket). The Rumraket roster includes one of my favorite bands, Grizzly Bear.

Their new album, Magic Chairs comes out February 22, 2010.

The second is a magical video of Efterklang peforming their song Cutting Ice to Snow with the Danish National Chamber Orchestra in Copenhagen.

Stornoway – Zorbing

Stornoway is a British alternative indie pop band from the Cowley area of Oxford that consists of singer and guitarist Brian Briggs; singer, guitarist, cellist and keyboardist Jon Ouin; singer, guitarist and bassist Oliver Steadman; and drummer Robert Steadman. Named after the Hebridean town on the Isle of Lewis, which appears on all UK televised weather reports and shipping forecasts, the group incorporates string instruments and keyboards, supported by a typical pop backline of guitar, drums, and bass guitar.

The band released their first single “Zorbing” in July 2009. Their second single “Unfaithful” was released on 28 September 2009 on CD, 7″ vinyl and iTunes digital download. The launch concert for this single was held at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London.

The band consists of an ornithologist, a rusty russian translator, and a South African brotherhood. They were first united in a snow-encrusted garage in Oxford, where they instantly attracted the attention of Dr & Mrs Killjoy the neighbours.

P.S. the bass player and drummer are brothers and they’re quite cute.

Midlake – The Courage of Others

“We don’t want to get called a Radiohead rip-off band. I think Radiohead is a lot closer to my natural tendencies as a songwriter than a band like, um, Jethro Tull. I listen to way more Jethro Tull than I do Radiohead these days, but I could write 10 Radiohead songs before I could write one Jethro Tull song. I want to sound more like Jethro Tull, but I just can’t. That’s a big struggle.”
—Tim Smith of Midlake

It must have been difficult for Midlake to top Van Occupanther – Midlake’s new album, The Courage of Others sounds more organic and folk inspired and less Fleetwood Mac. I dig it.

The Knife with Mt. Sims and Planningtorock – Colouring of Pigeons

“The Knife, in collaboration with Mt. Sims and Planningtorock, are to release the studio version of the opera ‘Tomorrow, In A Year’, on the 1st March 2010.

Commissioned by Danish performance group Hotel Pro Forma to write the music for their opera based on Charles Darwin and his book ‘On the Origin of the Species’, The Knife decided to make this a collaborative process, working with artists Mt. Sims and Planningtorock for the first time, to capture the huge width of the Darwin and evolution theme.” The Knife
